First past the post - what else do we have in common with Belarus?

In his letter to the Times our Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for Derbyshire Dales, Robert Court, adds his voice to those calling for the UK's first-past-the-post voting system to be replaced with proportional representation.

Robert Court, Derbyshire: May I add my voice to the plea for The Times to take a lead on proportional representation? We are out of step in retaining the first-past-the-post voting system: the only other European country to use it to elect the lower house of its legislature is Belarus. The Conservative Party and Labour leadership should be perturbed at the company they are keeping, although admittedly we at least wait for the electorate to cast its votes before counting them.
