Member of European Parliament
MEP
Bill Newton Dunn
Bill is a current Lib Dem MEP for the East Midlands. He has the best attendance record of all British MEPs, and was re-elected as a Liberal Democrat MEP for the East Midlands in June 2004.
Previously MEP (Conservative) for Lincolnshire from 1979 to 1994, Bill crossed the floor to the Lib Dems in 2000 because of the increasingly-negative and hopeless attitude of the Conservatives against Britain playing a leading role in Europe.
Bill serves on two parliamentary committees - Citizens Freedoms (which in the UK we would call Home Affairs) which deals with Immigration, Asylum, Policing, Visas, Criminal Law, etc. across the EU as a whole; and the Committee on Industry.
Bill coined the now much-used phrase "Democratic Deficit" in a pamphlet in the 1980s.
He is married with two children, and the author of four books (details on his own website www.newton-dunn.com)

Derbyshire County Council
Derwent Valley Division
Nigel Allwood
Nigel Allwood was elected as your county councillor for Derwent Valley four years ago and has greatly enjoyed the privilege of representing the people of community in which he was born and brought up. A truly local man, three generations of Nigel's family have lived in Darley Dale.
He has a wide experience at all levels of local government. First elected to Darley Dale Town Council, he became Town Mayor in 1997, with a one hundred percent record of attendance during his four year term. For the past ten years he has served on Derbyshire Dales District Council, again with a high level of attendance and commitment.
On Derbyshire County Council, he's been a member of the Regulatory - Planning and Control Committee as well as the Scrutiny and Improvement Committee for Sustainable and Safe Communities. Over the last four years, to keep in touch with all the communities he represents, he's attended over 250 Parish and Town Council meetings and has worked tirelessly to represent all his constituents regardless of politics.
Nigel lives with his partner Lynne, a Child Care Officer. Together they have helped to bring up Lynne's two sons, one of whom now serves as a soldier in the British Army while the other is a British Telecom engineer.
Nigel says: "
My experience at all levels of local government has given me a wide perspective which I can place at the disposal of all who seek my help, whatever their age and regardless of their political views.
While politics are important, it is meeting people and listening to their concerns that will always come first with me. When I manage to solve someone's problem, whether it be about housing, planning, social services or highway issues, even having holes in the road mended, I get a real sense of achievement. I always feel that each successful outcome that affects peoples' lives is a small victory.
For me , this is not about politics, it is about representing your best interests and I will go that extra mile to do so - but first - I will need your Vote on June 4th.

Steve Flitter
Steve says:
I have been a councillor for Matlock, Tansley and Riber since 1985 and have always put local people first and foremost regardless of differing political or religious views but I am proud to stand as a Liberal Democrat because I truly believe in freedom, fairness and trust.
I have been married to Ann for nearly 37 years and have five sons, four of whom are married and have given us five wonderful grandchildren with another on the way. I now manage the village shop in Winster because I am passionate about preserving a rural lifestyle, a healthy environment for our children and protecting local services.
I have been Mayor of Matlock twice and I am Deputy Mayor again this year. On the District Council I have held various chairmanships and was leader of the Council ten years ago.
My work for the past eight years at the County Council has concentrated on scrutiny of policy and resources, health and the Fire authority, along with active debate in full council.
Taking a positive role in debates, raising awkward and sometimes difficult questions, and putting forward a community view is sometimes the only way to achieve the high standards we strive for.
I have had the honour to serve you as a councillor for more than two decades but there is still work to be done and I am just as enthusiastic now as I was all those years ago. I hope that I have proved to be dependable, reliable, trustworthy and above all a loyal servant to those who live in this wonderful part of the country.
I now ask for your support again, on 4th June, election day, so that I can continue to work for the communities in which we live.

Candidates for Derbyshire County Council Elections - June 4th 2009
Candidate for Ashbourne Division
David P Jones
David, married with one daughter, works in the railway rolling stock business, as he has for most of the twenty two years since he gained an Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Having travelled and lived abroad in the past, he is now more interested in what can be done in Derbyshire - to enjoy it and to enhance it, at every level.
Like many people in Derbyshire, he recognises that we have to change the agenda to meet our needs in the future, not the past, and believes that there needs to be a fresh approach to how communities plan for their futures, one that is based on ensuring that we can meet our needs in a sustainable fashion.
"The Liberal Democrat party is the only party that has the vision and ability to make this happen."
David plays in his local brass band, and also enjoys rock climbing and walking the beautiful Derbyshire countryside.

James Jennings
James runs an economic regeneration consultancy, which works with a range of organisations including central government, charities and private firms. He has a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology from Leeds University and is a qualified and experienced project manager. ,James has 10 years experience working in public services across the UK, including at board level for large market leaders. He has made a commitment to help local business and charities to deliver public services and has worked with over twenty groups of charities and public bodies across the country to make sure that local people have a say in the services they receive. James has successfully competed at national level in cycling and Tae Kwon Do including against Olympic athletes and world champions in both sports. He regularly trained groups of up to 300 people in martial arts and self defence techniques. He also enjoys scuba diving, travelling and walking. James married Kate in 2004 at Riber Hall and they introduced Anna to the world in August 2008 at the Darley Birth Centre. James says "I took the plunge a few years ago and joined the Lib Dems as I feel they are best placed to shout about the needs of local people. With the recent events in parliament and perception of politics at an all time low, now is an opportunity for people to make their elected members work for them, rather than the other way around. If you elect me as your representative I will bring all my experience to making the council meet your needs, but most importantly I will listen and I will respond - I will have succeeded if I can restore your faith in the democratic process."

Derbyshire Dales District Council
Group Leader
David Fearn
David Fearn is leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on the Derbyshire Dales District Council
David Fearn is a happily retired teacher, married to Sandra for 42 years. David was born and brought up in Darley Dale and has been on the District Council continuously ever since it was formed in 1974. Currently he's Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group. He represents the District Council on the Board of Trustees for the Mid-Derbyshire Citizens Advice Bureau. He is also the Town Council's governor for Darley Churchtown C of E Primary School.
A member of Amnesty International, David has always believed in the rights of the individual and freedom of expression. As a district councillor, he tried on three separate occasions to get the council to allow the public to speak at council meetings. Three times Labour and Conservatives councillors rejected his proposals. It was only when he became Leader of the Council from 1995-98 that he finally succeeded, introducing public participation at all council meetings. This is now accepted practice and supported by all political groups on the council.
David says, "For me the most rewarding part of being a councillor is trying to help people with individual problems. Over the years it's been a real privilege to represent Darley Dale, a place I really care about."

David Burton
David Burton first became a district councillor in 1979 after being encouraged to stand for election by the late Leslie Fearn, a much-respected Liberal and Methodist preacher.
In standing for election, David thinks it's important to declare what his political beliefs are. He says, "For myself, it is very necessary to declare my politics by standing as a Liberal Democrat. The electorate is entitled to know what my convictions are and every copy of our 'Focus' newsletter states clearly, "What We Stand For."
Since 1980 David has lived in Two Dales with his wife Ruth and their two daughters, Rebecca and Rachael. During 1995-96, in recognition of his service to Derbyshire Dales District Council, he was elected unanimously by his fellow councillors to be the Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council.
David believes, "Darley is a rich mixture of precious and quite different communities, thankfully held together and sustained by the actions of countless kind and caring people. I've valued the opportunity to serve Darley Dale as a district councillor and always try to give of my best to help people whenever I can. My simple desire is to continue to serve as a ward member for Darley Dale, challenging and representing our area in a sensitive and productive way."

Barry Hopkinson
I am employed by Severn Trent Water Ltd on the technical side of Water Regulations dealing with Legionella Risk assessment and as a Water Conservation Advisor. In this capacity I deal face to face with the general public every working day
I am married to Kate who has lived in the area all of her life with two grown up sons, both who still live within the area.
I first took an active part in supporting the Liberal Democrats back in the early to mid 1970's when I lived in Chesterfield, but at that time mainly in a supporting role. It was not until 1994 when I moved to Matlock that I started to get involved in this area.
I stood as a Lib Dem candidate for Matlock Green ward on Matlock Town Council at the Elections in 2003, and was elected to the Town Council by a large majority
For the last three years I have been Chair Person of the Matlock in Bloom committee and last year Matlock achieved a very creditable second place in the competition. I
am actively involved in events such as the Victorian Christmas Market, the Farmers Markets held in Matlock and the Local Business Network Forum . Also during the year 2005 /2006 I had the honour to be elected and serve as the Mayor of Matlock and as such, act as chairperson for the town council.
I feel it is now time to step up a level and stand for a seat on Derbyshire Dales District Council as I feel I can offer a fresh approach and new ideas and also support and listen to the local people (something I think is lacking with the current system)

Cate Hopkinson
Cate Hopkinson was born in Bonsall in January 1948 and was known as Catrina Parker. She moved to Matlock at 7 years of age and attended Starkholmes Junior School and later Charles White Secondary Modern School. By then all the people who knew her had started to call her Cate.
Cate is married to Barry who is also a Town and District Councillor and she has always supported him in this role. Their two sons attended All Saints Infant and Junior Schools and both still live in Matlock. The younger son has worked in Tansley for many years.
Cate worked for Boots the Chemist initially on Dale Road and then on to Causeway Lane as a Pharmacy Dispenser for 10 years. She now works part-time for the NHS at a local surgery just outside Matlock, still as a Pharmacy Dispenser.
Two years ago Cate was elected to Matlock Town Council and through this she has been involved in all aspects of the community especially this past year in which she has had had the honour of representing the town as Mayor, which has enabled her to be very pro-active in the town supporting the community.
Cate says: - I have lived nearly all my life in Matlock, which I am very passionate about. Over the years I have seen the town change, some good and some not so good.
I now feel it is time to use my experience on a larger scale by standing to be your local District Councillor and hopefully put your views and concerns across and be of assistance to you.
If elected I will do my up most to serve Matlock. Time moves forward and some changes have to be made. I assure you if elected it would be an honour and a privilege to be one of the voices to be heard for what the people of Matlock would like. I know this will be a challenge which I am willing to under take.

Darley Dale Town Council - Liberal Democrat Members
Darley Dale
Stephen Keane
Stephen was born and brought up in Darley Dale by his parents, Jane and Pat Keane. He attended Churchtown Primary School and Highfields School. He is married to Kirsty, whose parents are licensees at the Grouse Inn. Kirsty and Stephen have two children; Hayley aged10 and Shannon aged 7. As a young lad of twelve, Stephen worked six years for Jim Taylor, the local milkman. Over the last ten years he's been employed by Derbyshire County Council and currently holds the position of Senior Commissionaire. He is a member of the trade union, Unison. In his spare time he enjoys fishing and clay pidgeon shooting.
What he says
"I know what its like to grow up in Darley Dale and understand better than anyone how fortunate I've been to live here. I'm standing for election to the Town Council to give back something to the community. I think it's important for someone like me, who's lived here all my life, to take an active part in helping to shape the future for Darley Dale. I don't believe politics should play a part on parish or town councils. However, I'm standing as a Liberal Democrat because I support them locally and think that people have a right to know this."
Proposing Stephen's nomination as a candidate, David Fearn says, "We need more young people like Stephen to stand for election. It's important the Town Council properly reflects all age groups. Stephen is his own man and, if elected, I'm confident he'll do his best for Darley Dale."

Sally Shaw
I was born at Darley Hall, the fourth generation of my family to live in Darley Dale. My mother Jan was also born and brought up in Darley while my father, Danny Shaw, was from Snitterton. Both my brother Mark and I went to local schools, attended Darley Hillside Sunday School, played in the streets, going to many events in Whitworth Park and enjoying a very happy childhood growing up in Darley Dale.
I believe the time is right for me to put something back into the community. It's important, that the soon-to-be refurbished Whitworth Centre becomes much more user-friendly, so as to cater for the interests of both young and old. I feel that we are letting our young people down. There's a need to provide better facilities for the 11 to 18 year olds in particular. The Whitworth Centre could offer a wider range of activities both inside and out that would appeal to them.
Greater use of the park needs to be encouraged with a range of seasonal events to get all ages involved in having fun together. Inside the Centre all manner of educational and recreational activities are needed, including perhaps a library/book shop and an Internet café. I have several of my own ideas but I'm very interested to know what you think, as after all, it is your Centre.
I've had quite a diverse working life so far, including working as a photographer for the County Council's Museum Department, secretary to the Royal College of Music as well in Public Relations and after that working in the Television Industry in London as a Production Coordinator. If elected, many of the skills I've acquired would be put to good use for the benefit of the community.
Most importantly, I have a great interest in the people of our community. I care passionately about Darley Dale and everyone who lives and works here. It is in this spirit that I am standing for election as one of your local representatives on Darley Dale Town Council.

I am a local person and Matlock and its people are part of me and who I am. I believe I can contribute on the District Council. But first - I need your Vote.

I have represented you on the District Council for the last 20 years and the Town Council for 24 years, during which time I have been Member Treasurer for many years, and held other offices. I have been closely involved in the Matlock Masterplan and improving the Town Council's new website - www.matlock.gov.uk
I have been a governor of All Saints Infant School since 1983 and a founding Trustee of the Cavendish Playing Fields Association, where we are striving to provide quality sports facilities. I am proud to be President of the local Branch of the Royal British Legion and also a member of the Civic Association, ATC Civilian Committee, Travel Society, Derbyshire Dales Ramblers and Twinning Association.
The next few years are vital to our town's future prosperity. We now have a town Masterplan and the Sainsbury's development is underway. I have always lived in Matlock and love the town. I believe that, with my colleagues, I am the right person to represent you in these interesting times. I trust I can rely on one of your votes again this year.

Candidate for Starkholmes and Riber - Matlock Town Council by-election - June 4th 2009
Ian Milne
Ian Milne
I am a metallurgical engineer by background. I have worked in the power generation industry for over 25 years, and latterly as an independent consultant. I moved to Derbyshire in 1992, and have lived in Matlock for the last 12 years. I live at the bottom of the High Tor Trail, along with my wife, an ex-nurse, two cats, our chickens, and our 3 donkeys, which many of you will have stopped to cuddle. Many people I meet agree with me that over the period I have lived here, the attractions of Matlock have declined considerably, and blame the District Council largely for this through poor management of facilities and poor decision making.
My personal interests include sport and leisure of all kinds, and include long distance and fell running as one of my principle activities. I am treasurer of Matlock AC, and through this organise one of the top 10 marathons in the country, run over the High Peak Trails. This brings in some 2000 visitors to Matlock for the race weekend, which adds several 10s of thousands of pounds worth of business to the community. Because of the value of this, both to Matlock and Matlock AC, and to other sports in Matlock, I attempted to save Sherwood Hall from closure through direct contact with the District Council, and through several letters to the Matlock Mercury, but to no avail. The decision was made hastily and in secret session, not what I would expect of a democratically elected council, and I would seek to prevent such a democratic deficit like this in the future.
Other poor decisions include the road layout following the development of Sainsbury's. Apart from its damaging effect on businesses in Matlock it has had a major impact on the people of Starkholmes, with the massively increased volume of traffic on Starkholmes Rd, which seems able to ignore the two speed humps outside the schools. I would do all I can to get the County Council to take measures both to reduce this traffic volume and reduce its speed. They don't seem to realise that where the road is at its narrowest, the pavement on one side disappears, so that people, including children, have to cross over, taking their lives in their hands.
I also have an interest in the quality of the environment, in all senses of that word. My scientific background gives me the facility to understand the finer points of the debate on climate change, to decide which parts of the argument are valid and which are not, and to make informed judgements on the need for and value of such things as wind turbines, and where they may best be sited. I don't believe these should disfigure the landscape, and would hope to influence any planning decisions for single or multiple wind turbines in such a way to avoid this. This goes for tele-communications towers also.
These are just some of the issues which affect the people of Starkholmes, and on which I feel I can make a difference. Living where I do, and seeing and talking to so many who pass by when my wife and I are out with the donkeys, I feel I can quickly gauge the feeling of the community on any of the myriad of things which affects it. I believe in open democracy, and though the town council has little responsibility for many of these things, it is often the first port of call to get anything done. I will certainly work as hard as I can for the people of this ward to help make Matlock what it was in the past.

I would like to introduce myself as your Liberal Democrat candidate for Derbyshire Dales District Council in the May 3rd election.
I have lived in Pilsley for 8 years, where I am involved with Village Fair and Fell Race. Some of you may have recently seen me as Olive Baba in Baslow Players 'Ali Baba' pantomime. If so, please note that I'm not that frightening in real life!
I work as a Landscape Architect. As such I have a good working knowledge of the planning legislation which controls all development including the Peak District National Park, and I am also aware of the requirements and responsibilities of a small business. I have had experience of working for Councils so I am familiar with their working structure and interaction with the tax-paying public for whom they provide services.
I do enjoy our countryside and appreciate the ongoing management, forestry and farming practices which ensure that the Peak District retains its characteristic appearance and way of life. There is bound to be a balance of compromises to ensure economic survival of Peak District communities, and the nature of compromise is that you're not always going to get your own way. However, I strongly believe that communities should speak up to let their opinions be known, about schools, hospitals, transport, waste collection and highways. The relative governing bodies are providing a service for the public and unless the public comment, the service may not be fit for purpose.
